Upendo is barefoot chic. It's unique in Zanzibar because it blends a loungy beachside bar / restaurant with a hip retreat. After leaving an upstairs Banda (a bit too noisy, this place is popular!) we were given a room in the adjacent Villa Shiva. This was pure heavenly bliss. There are worse things to do than lazing on a double swing bed, overlooking the beautiful ocean from your veranda. Or take a dip in the large swimming pool observing the turquoise sea with it's ever changing colors. The interior is contemporary but the open palm roofs gives it real Zanzibari character. The people are very friendly and you won't regret when food arrives.
